Tiny Cat
and the Storm

Tiny Cat is having a peaceful day aboard SV Calico when suddenly a storm rolls in. The waves are huge, the thunder is loud, and for a while she feels very small in the middle of the ocean. But she takes a deep breath, keeps going, and discovers something very important: you can’t be brave without feeling scared first.

Why this story helps

Stories give children a safe way to explore feelings that might otherwise feel overwhelming. When a child hears about Tiny Cat facing something frightening and finding her way through it, they can begin to understand that feeling scared is normal. And that it doesn’t have to stop you.

This story introduces the idea that fear isn’t a sign that something is wrong. It’s a signal. And that doing something brave doesn’t mean not feeling scared. It means feeling scared about something and doing it anyway.

Captain’s Notes

The Captain’s Notes include thoughtful questions from Tiny Cat, to encourage your
child to talk about the story and share their own experiences of feeling scared.

There is also an activity that invites your child to design their very own brave jacket,
to help them feel brave when a ‘big storm’ arrives
