Colouring

Building awareness and calm attention

Colouring gives children a chance to slow down and focus on something simple. Repetitive, gentle movements are naturally calming, helping to settle a busy nervous system. For young children especially, this kind of focused, unhurried activity can be a really effective way to calm down.

Research shows that simple mindfulness activities can help children become more aware of their thoughts and feelings, without becoming overwhelmed by them.

For younger children, mindfulness is most effective when activities are short, simple and linked to something physical, like colouring.
